Every button is turned or carved by hand using traditional methods. It has to look right, sit right in the buttonhole, and feel right between the fingers.

Four woods. Three shapes. Two finishes.

  • Romsø — 40 and 30 mm

    Carved with a slight taper at each end.

  • Stavre — 40 and 30 mm

    Four crisp edges running lengthwise between soft faces.

  • Molø — No. 1–5, 15–30 mm

    Round and turned on the lathe with two holes. Linseed oil only.

    Maple

    Pale with a tight, closed grain. Mellows to a warm honey tone.

  2. Oak grain, macro

    Oak

    Coarse grain and pronounced figure. Golden, darkening with use.

  3. Walnut grain, macro

    Walnut

    Warm chocolate brown with strong variation. Deepens with the years.

  4. Ebony grain, macro

    Ebony

    Heavy and extraordinarily dense. Coal black.

Finishes

Linseed oil

Applied on the lathe or in a day-long bath. Brings out the natural grain and colour. A hard-wearing, dirt-resistant finish.

  • Hand wash cold; avoid prolonged soaking.
  • Re-oil as needed.

Shellac

Natural resin dissolved in spirit and applied in many ultra-thin coats. Gives a bright, even surface. Offered only on Romsø and Stavre in maple and ebony.

  • Does not tolerate moisture well.
  • Avoid washing where possible.
  • Otherwise: hand wash cold, no soaking.

Lars Bjerre outside the workshop on Hindsholm

KNAPVÆRK is based on the Hindsholm peninsula near Kerteminde, Denmark, and is run by Lars Bjerre. Production began in 2025, after a long period of development.

We make nothing but buttons. They are turned and carved to order, so the batches are small, and no button leaves the workshop until it is as it should be.
